Specialized P.3 vs. P.2 Cro-Mo

Hi Lee
I have your Mastering Mountain Bike Skills, and Pump track e-book. Both are excellent, and I have learned a lot from them. I wish I lived close enough to you to take some skills clinics. Do you ever come to Canada (Ontario)?

Just a quick question about Specialized P.bikes, I can get a P.2 Cro-Mo frame for a good price, but how will it compare to the P.3 you ride?

Keep on BRAAAPING.

Thanks
Stefan

Yeti 4X for all-around love?

Hi Lee – wondered if I could ask your advice on a bike?

At the moment I mainly ride a hardtail – I’ve worked backwards from a really big bike, and have got to a point where I just ride a chameleon, with a pike fork, and i LOVE it! This change came about from your advice about riding bikes that are too big for the job – it’s SOOO right!

I’ve been offered a good deal on a YETI 4X – I know you do some work for Yeti, and wondered if you thought this would make a good all-round bike – just a bit more capable than the hardtail? Or is it too focused to use for anything other than 4X?

Also, is a FOX 36 set to 130mm overkill?

Thanks again for your help Lee.

Best wishes – Chris

PS – It’s cool to see how things have settled down for you – I’m glad you’re happy!!

Finding the right coil spring

Lee,

Got a question about coil springs: when do I need to step up to a heavier weight? I’m running an older Vanilla TC rear shock with a 550 lb spring. 500 lbs was definitely too light. 550 will work, but with a lot of turns to the preload collar. I’m not 100% on my damping settings, but it seems to work pretty well a few clicks in from full fast. Is there a compelling reason to go purchase a 600 lb spring?

Thanks. Scott.

What’s with Stacy Kohut’s FOURCROSS brakes?

Hey Lee,
I was just looking at Stacy Kohut’s website and i saw the picture of his ride and it has 2 brake levers on each side. I know exactly what this is for. Wouldn’t it be much simpler if someone were to make a brake line the spliced off into two separate lines so you can control both brakes with one lever?

Tara Llanes begins a tough recovery

4X and BMX honchess Tara Llanes suffered a major spinal injury at last weekend’s Jeep King of the Mountains Race. Now recovering from major surgery, she’s in good spirits but currently has no feeling in her lower body.

I first met Tara back in 1993 at Mammoth. It was her first mountain bike race, and the teen BMXer placed second in pro dual slalom. She was a great rider and super cute, and John Ker from Mountain Bike Action convinced her to model with me and some guys for a cover shot. We rode along the edge of an alpine lake about 100 times, and the whole time her mom kept a close eye on all us dudes! In the almost-15-years since then, Tara has been widely regarded as a top rider and — more importantly — a quality person.

No matter how this shakes out, I’m confident Tara has what it takes to come out stronger and wiser. Now it’s time for her to really pin it.

Let’s all send her our best wishes, and maybe some cash (and donuts). Click the Keep reading >> link for more details.

Setting up a P.3

Lee, I am picking up a 2007 Specialized P.3 for dirt jumping, pump tracks, and park riding. I would like to get the bike as light as possible without jeopardizing the strength of the bike. As I look for a light weight fork which is still strong, I am considering: Fox Talas RLC, Rock Shox Pike (not sure which model would be best), Rockshox Argyle 409, or the Marzocchi DJ. Which would you advise if weight is one of my considerations? Also, do you have the build specs on your P.3?

It’s a different world

Hi all. Sorry I’ve been off the back on the site action. Lots of Living with a capital L.

– Last weekend I took my 18-year-old stepdaughter Kate to college. She attends Sweet Briar, a private women’s college in Virginia. What a whirlwind of moving in, arranging stuff, finding the right computer cables, supporting her mom … I missed the G3 race at SolVista, but it was worthwhile.

– A few days at home for maximal work and minimal riding. Braaap.

– Leaving tomorrow for NorCal. Not bringing a bike. Bringing Arlette and my 14-year-old stepson Ian to meet my parents and my new little nephew. I turn 38 tomorrow. Saturday is my parents’ 39th anniversary. It’s Family with a capital F.

I lived a lot of years just doing my own thing — riding and working, and getting all of my identity from those things. It’s a different world now. Wierd sometimes. Challenging sometimes. But cool.

When I get back from NorCal, I’ll get back to riding my bike and posting on this site, then head to Keystone for the MSC finals. The Fix Jr. Team is leading the series. I didn’t get to race this year, but how cool it’ll be to see those meatballs on the podium.

Yeah, it’s a different world.

Shorten travel on BigHit? No!

hello lee,

I’m a proud owner of a custom spec big hit 07.

and i thought if it is possibly to tune it more into a smaller bike (less travel). i know mark weir rides a vp free with fox 36.
my question is if it feels wired with 160 up front and 200 in the back. or can i get less travel in the back without killing the geo??

thanks
holger
