Word of the day: impunity

n.
Exemption from punishment, penalty, or harm

— — —

My Enduro SL with Hayes Stroker brakes felt so dialed, I ripped that trail with impunity.

I feel sketchy and I want better brakes!

Hey Lee,

Before getting to the question, I just want to see you’ve got a great thing going here. It’s a very helpful and informative site.

Okay, so I have a Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc with the standard Shimano 415 disc brakes. I’ve noticed that I need a bit more stopping power since I’m around 200 lbs and I ride in some very hilly terrain. I want to upgrade to Avid BB7 discs. I also wish to step up to a larger sized rotor. Many sites mention that its not recommended with XC forks and the rear triangle might not fit it. The BB7 rotors are availible in 160, 185, and 203 sizes. Which could I safely step up to (if at all)?

What is this “internal headseat” business?

Hey Lee, I am trying to replace my busted headset and I bought a new 1 1/8″ HS, but it didn’t fit, so I look at the website and it says internal cup 1 1/8″. What in the world is a internal cup headset?

Downsides of long stem?

Hey. So do you think a longer stem would make the bars turn funny, bunny hopping awkward and going over the bars more likely, or would it just give me more front wheel traction without affecting other stuff?
Thanks again,
Alex

Off to Telluride

Another MSC is about to go down. It’s a different thing this year: not racing, concentrating on coaching, seeking a deeper satisfaction, traveling with my love.

We slept in my Sprinter at Snowmass; for Telluride we’re rocking a sweet condo. Since we don’t need a house on wheels, we’re driving her car. My Demo 8 fills the back seat of her 530xi, so there’s no room for the Enduro SL. It’s weird to go anywhere without an Enduro, but I have my super-excellent wife … and in that luxurious rocket we’ll get to Telluride in record time!

A year ago: Traveled by myself. Camped by myself. Broke three ribs on Friday. Suffered through the weekend. Drove home by myself. Chest muscles spasming; doubled over in agony for the six-hour drive. Alone.

Life is change. This is better!

XL with short stem or L with long stem?

Hi Lee,

Love your book, love your site and can’t wait for the DVD. I have a question for you.

I have an 2007 Giant Anthem 1. I have recently started racing XC. I was toying with the idea of purchasing an Anthem Advance but have come up with this question. I am 6’2 and currently ride an XL 22′ frame. I have recently lowered the seat after reading ur book and hearing interview and run a 100mm stem. Am I better to run a larger frame (XL) or go to a shorter frame (L) and run a longer stem?

If I ride a Large with a 120mm stem its pretty much the same length just the head tube length is shorter so I would need run higher bars etc.

Thanks in advance. Darren

Stems and bars: Long and low or short and high

Lee,
I am currently riding a Thomson 90mm w/5 degree rise on my 575 and have considered trying a shorter stem. Unfortunately none of my friends or any of the local shops have one for me to demo. I do, however, have a 2″ riser bar that I purchased at a swap meet but have never used. I am currently using a 1″ riser bar. My question is this: Couldn’t I achieve the same result installing the 2″ riser bar and adjusting the sweep back towards the saddle as I could by installing a 70mm stem?
