In progress: Cool things

1. Skills camp this weekend at Darnerland, in Nathrop, CO. Coaches: me, Jon Watt, Bobbi Watt and Zach Griffith. Pupils: 18 riders ages 9-51, beginner-semipro. Location: The sickest square mile on Earth, with two 4X course and a DS course. Let’s hope for good weather.

2. It’s been hard to keep this secret: Steve Wentz and I are building a huge bike park at Lory State Park near Fort Collins, CO. I did the documentation; right now Wentz is doing the dirt. Within a couple weeks the park will have: A. a fenced-off skills area, B. the world’s largest pump track (sorry Weir), C. a dual slalom course and D. three lines of dirt jumps. The bike area will be open to everyone who pays the park entry fee. We’re planning a big opening party; details at 11.

Last night my rear quick release failed, and I ate it *very* hard. The mild concussion and total body pain aren’t cool, but just about everything else is. Have a great weekend!

Proposed rules: Pump Track Worlds

Let’s say you’re all hanging out, pump pump pumping, and someone decides it’s time to name a champion. Until the National Pump Track Association gets formed, anyone can hold the world championships. Here’s my proposal:

Attack of the race-day nerves

Hey Lee…

I race DH, and recently I find my nerves get the better of me during my race runs. My last race I did, I thought my legs were going to give out 1/4 of the way down the racecourse and felt like I had no more gas in the tank.
My practice runs usually go very well…but as soon as the pressure of doing well in my race runs…it just seems my mind takes over. Do you have tips on how to handle the pressure of racing.

XC racing on a 6-inch bike?

Hello,

Love your book! I haven’t found anything better out there as far as teaching bike handling goes.

Anyways, I have a Giant Reign, a 6′ trail bike [sic]. However, I have recently become intrigued with the idea of trying my hand at college XC racing. Would it be silly to even try to enter a race with such a beastly (though surprisingly efficient for its size) bike? I have a crazy urge to try it, but I wonder if it would just be pure agony to make it through a race on one these bad boys. I wish they had Super D at the collegiate level. That would be perfect for me, I think. Thanks for your help!

Of ebooks and karma

Stoked: Lots of people are ordering Welcome to Pump Track Nation, and plenty are telling me they dig it. The ebook was a lot of work, and I’m glad people enjoy it.

Not stoked: Three times as many people have downloaded the PDF as have paid for it.

If you stole my ebook: You better build a sweet pump track and let the local kids rip all they want. That’s your karmic duty. And you might want to pay up — just to be safe.

Effect of longer fork?

Lee,

What is your opinion on a manufacturer decreasing a bike’s head angle by adding a longer travel fork? Are the benefits the same as a bike with a slack head angle to begin with? Does this change how well the rear suspension works?
