Drive, drive, drive

Still wrung out from the Otter. 10 muddy bikes stewing in the back of the Brick. Heading east. Yesterday taught three Reno firefighters how to corner. Today a speaker started popping then spouted acrid smoke out of my dashboard. Whoa — pull off I-80, tear it all apart and disconnect. Just got an assignment to write about tricked-out belts and hoses for slammed Civics. OK … Reading Sport Compact Car while pumping diesel, trying to learn their language. Can these guys be even nerdier than me? … The ad copy is due Friday. Stories for NSMB and Mountain Biking due this week. Coaching this Saturday and Sunday. Not to mention all the Sea Otter reports. Wash the bikes maybe Tuesday? Currently rocking Flying J wifi in Rock Springs, WY. All I can say is … BRAAAP!

And another Sea Otter is in the books

I’ll rock the full report in the next few days, but briefly:

MUD: Heavy rains turned DS, DH and 4X practice into something other than mountain biking. Lots of sliding. Lots of flopping over handlebars. Lots of scootering with your feet. Not mountain biking — more like sliding-flopping-scootering.

The dual slalom was as rutted and gnarly as a World Cup downhill, or maybe a motocross track. It was just crazy. The flat downhill is a tough pedal on a dry day — in this muck it was a grunt and a push and maybe a run too. Mountain cross was beautifully designed, but sticky and sloooooowwwwwwwww. Riders needed power. Spectators needed patience.

LOPES: He won the slalom and mountain cross in typical Lopes fashion. In case anyone’s wondering, he said he’d quit racing for a million dollars. So that leaves everyone with some choices: 1) Step it up. 2) Wait for Lopes to get old and feeble. 3) Pitch in some cash, throw the guy a banquet and send him on his way.

GRAVES: Could have ridden the downhill course, ridden a rodeo bull then still won. Awesome. Not to mention third in mountain cross.

ALL THE CHARACTERS: It was great seeing everyone. We all struggled with the weather and course conditions, but — hey — it’s mountain biking, and it’s just plain fun.

Details at eleven …

Clinics at Sea Otter

Clay hones his kung fu in hardcore clinic action. This dude was fast to start with — now he’s retarded-fast.

Hi all. If any of you want to rock some skills while you’re at the Sea Otter, email me and let’s set something up during a break.

We can work on position, cornering, pump or pretty much anything you want. A couple hours with me and I PROMISE you’ll be a better rider. I help most people take 1/3 to 1 second off a tight corner.

My rates are the same for one to three riders, so you can get some buddies together if you want.

One hour: $100

Two hours: $150

Time permitting, we can do pretty much whatever you want. You’ll dig it!
