Adding dirt to a pump track

Hi Lee,
I haven’t been here in a while, but Spring is around the corner and I am about to order more dirt for my somewhat settled pumptrack. My question is…

What is the best way to “mesh” new dirt with the old, hard packed track?? Should I wet the old track and put the dry dirt on top of the mud and then re-water? I’m afraid that I will end up with a bunch of new, loose dirt over the hard stuff. Thanks Lee!

Western Denver pump track action

Oh man, it’s been way too long. I’ve been staying semi-fit, but I haven’t done anything fun since I broke some ribs a month ago.

On Saturday Evan, Ian and I went on a little road trip to ride our friend Robyn’s track. This is a private track; do not ask me for directions!

How muddy is too muddy?

Hey Lee,
Nobody’s ever been able to give me an answer that seemed reasonable to this question, but you know this kind of thing, so maybe you can weigh in: When is it ok to ride a wet trail?

Back in high school, we used to rip it up in waist-deep mud just to see how dirty we could get. It never even occurred to us that the scars and ruts we left on the wet trails would be there for months. Now that I’m a little more “enlightened,” I’m never sure how long I should wait after rain before I hit the trails. How damaging is it to ride a wet trail? Do we need to wait until it’s dry enough that our tires won’t leave a rut? The NorCal rainy season is upon us and I can’t take it anymore — I want to get out and ride… but I don’t want to ruin my favorite spots.

What do you think!?

Thanks Lee.

Riding in San Diego?

Hey Lee,
I am thinking about taking a job in San Diego. Do you know of any good dirt jump parks in the area? Of course accessibility to dirt jumps and good mtb trails is more important than how much I will like the job …
Thanks, Jason

MTB vs moto prices: rip-off?

Hey Lee,
I like MTBiking and moto like you, and certainly favour MTB. The question I always have is the prices of MTB. A motor bike is not much dearer than a top of the line MTB. I thought motorbike has a lot more technology and R&D costs associate with it. Are MTB companies just ripping us off?

From the archive: Porcupine Rim Trail (DH style)

This story was originally posted April 27, 2004. Snowbound in Boulder, I’m dreaming about Moab!

We were in Moab last weekend to help with the Tour de Canyonlands XC race and get in some riding action. On Saturday, after we wrangled hay bales and parking cones, we gathered a crew and took on the famous Porcupine Rim Trail. Porc’ is one of those must-do Moab rides, and I was stoked to finally add it to my life list.
