XL with short stem or L with long stem?

Hi Lee,

Love your book, love your site and can’t wait for the DVD. I have a question for you.

I have an 2007 Giant Anthem 1. I have recently started racing XC. I was toying with the idea of purchasing an Anthem Advance but have come up with this question. I am 6’2 and currently ride an XL 22′ frame. I have recently lowered the seat after reading ur book and hearing interview and run a 100mm stem. Am I better to run a larger frame (XL) or go to a shorter frame (L) and run a longer stem?

If I ride a Large with a 120mm stem its pretty much the same length just the head tube length is shorter so I would need run higher bars etc.

Thanks in advance. Darren

Stems and bars: Long and low or short and high

Lee,
I am currently riding a Thomson 90mm w/5 degree rise on my 575 and have considered trying a shorter stem. Unfortunately none of my friends or any of the local shops have one for me to demo. I do, however, have a 2″ riser bar that I purchased at a swap meet but have never used. I am currently using a 1″ riser bar. My question is this: Couldn’t I achieve the same result installing the 2″ riser bar and adjusting the sweep back towards the saddle as I could by installing a 70mm stem?

Specialized Pin’er and Pinn’it?

Updated with tire weights.

Hi Lee,
First of all, I would like to say thank you for your reviews of the new Specialized tires. It’s been very difficult to find info about them anywhere else.

Secondly, I was wondering if you might happen to know the weight in grams of the 2.3 Pinn’er Pro and the 2.5 Pin’it Pro?

I am looking for something new to try for Downieville, CA and these tires seem like they could be a great fit. However, although the trail that I will be riding in Downieville is approximately 90% downhill, the XC side in me would still like something that climbs fairly well, won’t way me down like an anchor and doesn’t roll like a complete snail. Anything over 850/900 grams is probably more than I need.

My final question is if you feel that these tires have fairly durable/sturdy sidewalls?

Thanks a lot for your help and again for the great reviews!

Sincerely,

Randy

Enduro SL sizing?

Lee,

First of all, I want to thank you for your site. It has been an excellent source of information for me and my co-riders.

I know you are riding the enduro sl and I’m having trouble with size. I’m 5’11” with a 31″ inseam and I have heard that I need a large for one bike shop and a medium from another. I’ll be riding all the front range stuff and usually take 3 trips or so a year to Keystone. I’ve ridden them both around and the large seems a bit big but I sit pretty upright on the medium. I’m really confused about size and it seems that I’m right between the two sizes. Since I know you ride the Endo SL and you live in CO I thought you might be able to help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is your site the only place to buy your Mastering Mtn Biking Skills book?

Thanks for your help.

Matt

Chain Fu Magazine, Issue #897

Lee,

First of all, great site. Secondly, on my Enduro SL I often have a problem with my chain bouncing off the middle ring to the small ring when riding rough terrain. Also, sometimes when I shift from the middle ring to the small ring, the lower part of the chain bounces back up and gets stuck between the frame and big ring. Any suggestions and have you experienced this on your SL.

Thanks

Mike

Stumpy or Enduro SL? (again)

Hello Lee – looks like you’ve got some experience with the Enduro SL so I’ve got a question to ask. At 220lbs and 6ft 2ins (fit not fat) I’ve got a straight choice (for an Enduro 2003 warranty replacement) between a stumpy FSR or an Enduro SL (fitted with Fox 36 forks ‘cos specialized are having probs with theirs). I’m swaying towards the Enduro but am concerned that the Fox forks will ruin its geometry. What do you recon?
Thanks, Rich

Ultimate truck bed bike rack?

Hi Lee,
I’m looking for the ultimate truck bed bike rack. I need something to haul 3 or 4 bikes in the bed of the truck (no bike bumpers!), and would like a model that does not require removal of the front wheel. Anything that does all this for under $300?

Thanks,
Mark

Which all-around bike? (again)

Hello Lee,
I really need your pro advice for getting a new full sus. It’s my first time getting a ful sus(I was only on hardtail before). And I only have $2500 dollars CDN. I am not a crazy aggressive rider; I am planning to do up to 10 feet drops. But I also love cruising around the town with friends and travel long distance. I was thinking about getting the Giant Reign series. But I am not sure. Which bike comes right in your mind?
Thanks!
Dan
